No.17: The old petrol place

17. The old petrol place

My last drawing in Belo and an image I didn’t want to leave without capturing. Petrol is being sold from plastic water bottles and, for reasons of economy, most taxi drivers (and nearly all cars serve as taxis) buy only the small quantity of petrol needed for their next journey. At the time of my visit, a western-style filling station was being built at the other end of the village. Every night the various petrol sellers around Belo are required to store their plastic bottles of petrol inside this metal trailer for safekeeping. One of the petrol attendants sits smoking a cigarette. The instructions on the side of the trailer refer to a deep trench immediately in front of it that we can't see in the painting.
